ARTIST BIO

Lauren Monaco is a multi-disciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Born in Ohio to a creative family, Lauren was always encouraged to create, whether it be in wood, paint, clay, concrete, fabric, or design. She strongly believes that every person can enjoy creative thinking and the pleasure of making. She graduated from Kent State University with a BFA in sculpture in 2000.

Monaco’s work explores the intersection of pop culture and fine art using humor and a critical lens on authority, power, and audience. Her most recent works are reinterpretations of iconic ‘fine art’ pieces by male artists using the medium of stickers and washi-tape. By reinterpreting canonical pieces of the past using materials typically marketed to children and women and used for decorating everyday objects, she explores and critiques the work and strips away pretensions of the past.
